Maryland Mandates Minimum Wage at $15 Per Hour on January 1, 2024
Maryland has revised the current schedule for its rising minimum wage to $15 per hour across the board, starting on January 1, 2024, in Maryland. This represents one year sooner than scheduled by previous state legislation. Right now, it is $13.25 hourly statewide.
The Fair Wage Act of 2023, also known as Senate Bill SB0555, was passed by the Maryland legislature around April 5, 2023, and signed into law on April 11, 2023. It also repeals an annual administrative cost-of-living adjustments thereafter, which leaves further changes in the hands of the legislature.
The Maryland Department of Labor has issued new wage posters and information for use online in advance, linked here. Senate Bill SB0555 can be read via link here.
Maryland's minimum wage permits and does not prevent Howard County from setting their minimum wage to $16 in 2025 as currently scheduled. The minimum wage is $15 already in busy Montgomery County, Maryland for employers with 50 or less employees, and slightly higher for larger employers. The U.S. minimum wage is $7.25, and might be paid in other states, but is superseded in Maryland by the Maryland minimum.
